#comments: From iPhone 3G to 3GS

I'm not sure that "iPhone Pro" would be a great name for the 3Gs- because it would probably put off a big chunk of the market. How many people who were waiting for the new version before shelling out for the latest piece of smartphone technology consider themselves a smartphone "pro"? Probably not nearly as many as interested users who are making their first entry into the Smartphone world. The unspoken implication that the 3G is for "amateurs" would probably be a selling point for some who might otherwise spend an extra $100/£100.

I think the 3G/3Gs distinction is more of a "premium" than "professional"- you buy a Macbook Pro because you need the extra power, because you are using it all day, day in, day out. (If you just want shiny MacBook action, you'll probably tend towards the Air.)

That's a good point - "Pro" could turn the mainstream off from buying an iPhone although I would be curious to see what impact it has on the macbook line. I hadn't thought of that and I can see how it might be a concern. Still, I think 3GS is a silly naming scheme and it seems like a very odd place for Apple to drop their typically very consumer friendly naming habits on their what is currently their most important mass market consumer product line.

I have a 3G and would have upgraded to the 3GS if it weren't for my December subsidy eligibility. I've been thinking about circumventing this restriction but am too lazy to go through with it and can kinda wait until then (a Christmas present to myself? ha) I'm also trying to stay away from using a 3GS; I wonder if it would be like using a fast computer for the first time after having used a slow one. Can you back?

On your point about the camera, F, I saw a Flickr chart today on some site showing the upward trend of photos taken with an iPhone. I don't know how much the iPhone will cut into the sales of digital cameras b/c not everyone wants an iPhone; a camera doesn't require a big monthly data plan. Also, I don't really follow the iPod Touch but as far as I know it doesn't have a built-in camera (right?). If THAT device gets one then I think a segment of the digicam market will suffer, esp. with all the photo manip. software available in the App Store. I have an app on my iPhone called Photogene--it's a mini-Photoshop app that lets you crop and adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, etc.

Also, I would like to take this opportunity (in lieu of having my own blog for my ranting) to say that the upgrade process to OS 3.0 was just awful. I had to download it twice. The first time an error stopped the back up process. When I extracted 3.0 a second time, the backup took something like four hours. All in all, from start to finish, it took a good five hours. Why does it take 4 hours to back up 16G of data?
